How to Write With Clarity

write with clarity

To become an established writer, you must make your content understandable to the audience.

Here are three useful tips you can follow to start writing with clarity.

1. Understand your purpose in writing.

Before you start writing about anything, you need to determine your purpose.

You can use the following questions to brainstorm your purpose:

  • Who are you writing for?
  • What is your topic?
  • What are your subtopics?
  • What problem would you like to solve?
  • What’s your goal?
  • What type of writing are you going to do? (i.e., business writing, creative writing, technical writing)

Once you specify your purpose, it’ll be easier to arrange your thought process and write clearly.

The definition of writing with clarity also differs in the type of writing you’re doing. For example, if you’re writing for business, like letters, emails, memos, then clear writing means using simple words

2. Use vivid verbs.

When it comes to creative writing or writing novels, poems, and literary pieces, using strong verbs can help readers imagine the characters’ actions better and make your story more interesting.

It also enriches the scene and makes it more realistic.

Sample: Kristin is angry. *You are just stating Kristin’s emotion, so there are too many ideas you can think of, and the scene will be vague.

Vivid: Kristin clenches her fist and stomps out of the room. *You included her behavior and gesture, which makes it easier to imagine the exact scene.

Here are some more examples:

  • She approached me with a glint in her eyes.
  • The baby is sleeping, so he tiptoed his way to bed.

3. Outline your work.

Although your choice of words plays a massive part in clarity, your work’s structure or flow will determine its cohesiveness.

It is vital to note that you need to define your purpose first to outline your work correctly. It will always boil down to that.

If you’re writing a novel, you should know the parts of the story and create an outline out of it.

For business writing, you need to gather all the essential information and put a call-to-action at the end.
