How to Become a Successful Writer

become a successful writer

There are no concrete step-by-step guides in becoming a successful writer, but here are some tips that will lead you to the right path.

1. Define what success means to you.

Having your own definition of success will help you set the right goals as a writer.

While some might view success as having the power to buy expensive cars, big houses, and luxurious possessions, not all people look at it that way.

5 Ways of Measuring Success

What are you trying to achieve from these things?

a. Balance

Are you pursuing a work-life balance?

Do you want to spend time with your family without any restrictions? Or do you want to have a job that will let you pursue other hobbies?

b. Wealth

Does being a successful writer to you mean becoming rich or having financial freedom?

c. Fame

Do you want to be a writer who receives global awards? Who has a huge following? An author behind a movie adaptation? Do you want to have your own book signing event?

d. Passion

Do you want to be able to do something you love for the rest of your life?

e. Contribution

Some people think that if they contribute to their client’s business growth or give back to their community through their writing skills, they are successful writers.

Are you one of them? Do you want to measure success based on the number of people you’ve helped?

2. Ask for other people’s views.

Sometimes, seeing yourself in other people’s eyes is helpful. Why? Because there are times when we can’t see our own success.

I know that you often hear, “don’t worry about what others think,” but not all opinions are negative. Some people see you as an inspiration or a role model. You just need to choose the right people to ask.

3. Be mindful of your attitude.

“Your attitude, not aptitude, will determine your altitude”

Zig Ziglar

To become a successful writer, you need to evolve and always strive for improvement BUT more than the skills, your attitude will determine how far you’ll go in life and career.

No matter how good you are at writing, you still need to work with other people. You need to learn to cultivate the right attitude because no one will want to continue working with a rude and unaccommodating person.

This is not only applicable to freelance writing but also in other fields.

4.  Build your system.

If you want to climb your way to success, focus more on your system, not on your goal.

While goals guide you in the right direction, your system will determine if you will achieve them or not.

5.  Join a writer’s group.

You can always learn something about your craft from other people in the same field. Joining a community will also help you be motivated and feel less lonely in your journey.
